Week 3 Legislative Update
Norman, Don & Dawson give a brief recap of week 3, and highlight 11 pieces of legislation, including:
The “Do No Harm” bill – Legislation was introduced by Rep. Les Heinemann (HB1153) to ensure that doctors are able to follow the hippocratic oath and do no harm. If a medical professional is faced with a choice between what they know is best for the patient in front of them, and a policy or directive from the “higher-ups,” they should be protected in their decision to protect the patient – doctors should never be forced to chose between their patient and their job.
Partners in Education Scholarships – This scholarship program has served hundreds of families in South Dakota, and opened new doors for students. This session, through SB84, the legislature has expanded the student eligibility – unlocking new doors for South Dakota families. The bill has passed unanimously!
Education Tax Credits – Rep. John Sjaarda has introduced legislation to provide property tax credits to families who choose private school or homeschooling. We are always excited about new options for families, and will be examining if this roadmap will unlock the right doors for the families who need it the most!
Birth Centers – There are many areas in South Dakota that can be categorized as “maternity deserts.” These areas, with no nearby hospitals, offer no maternity options to mothers in South Dakota. HB1127 could help remedy this problem, by enabling certified professional midwives (CPM’s) to supervise birth centers in the state.
“What is a Woman” – Rep. Jon Hansen has introduced legislation to not only define man and woman, but require that these definitions be followed by all aspects of state government. This would include policies and decisions on prisons, birth certificates, state contracts, and more.
Stay tuned for further updates, and details on additional legislative efforts!
